Founded by Gail (Stephens) Mejia in 1995, Baker & Spice quickly established itself as a new kind of food shop. The first shop in Walton Street evolved into an exceptional establishment. It was a tiny shop with huge kitchens in the back, and a real bakery in the basement, the original Victorian bread ovens still working. This amazing facility allowed us to produce everything ourselves. We decided at the outset that excellence is our game and we have focused on achieving this ever since.
Everything in the shop is made in our kitchens from scratch.

We do our utmost to behave responsibly and ethically, and to purchase our ingredients from sustainable sources. We pay particular attention to where ingredients come from and choose to use organic ingredients wherever possible. Our obsession with quality and freshness stems from our desire to produce the very best.
Today, Baker & Spice is the most successful boutique-style food retailer in the country with a dedicated following across London and far beyond. We employ some 80 highly-skilled members of staff in our four shops located in Chelsea, Belgravia, Maida Vale and Queen’s Park.
Baker & Spice’s croissants, baked daily in each of our shops, are heralded as iconic. The shops are also known for an inspiring range of cooked food prepared on-site, fabulous cakes and pastries as well as a wide-range of original sourdough breads.
